BP Oil Spill: Ten Horrifying Facts

Gulf Oil Spill: 10 Horrifying Facts You Never Wanted To Know

1. New estimates show the undersea well has spilled between 17 and 39 million gallons. These estimates dwarf those of BP, who claimed the spill had only released 11 million gallons to date, and mean that the Gulf leak is far bigger than Exxon Valdez, making it the worst spill in American history.

2. The National Wildlife Federation reports that already more than 150 threatened or endangered sea turtles are dead. And 316 sea birds, mostly brown pelicans and northern gannets, have been found dead along the Gulf Coast as a result of the spreading oil.

3. The Minerals Management Service, directly under the supervision of the Interior Department failed to impose a full review of potential environmental impacts of the BP drilling operation because preliminary reviews of the area concluded that a massive oil spill was “unlikely.”

  1. Perhaps some old fashioned fire service know-how might be utilized in the quest for a resolution here.

Simply fabricate a large diameter quasi-bell shaped unit with sharp bottom edges so as to substantively dig into the ocean bed floor once placed.

Incrementally staged, quasi-conical fittings are attached to the original monster-sized quasi-bell mentioned above.

Subsequently, one there exist enough ‘reducer’ fittings to bring it down to a manageably practical size (ex: 3 to 4 ft.) such an aforemntioned diameter hose would be attached at this juncture with sufficient length to stretch to the surface of the watter line.

Note: This eminently simplistic, potentially effective fabrication would be lowered to the oil leak as a fully assembled unit that is tethered to an empty tender barge where oil can be displaced as it come out of water like a whale’s spout………….JMcH, Fairfield, CT/Ret.FDNY

  2. I think they tried to do something similar with a concrete container but couldn’t get it to actually fit over the well. But they don’t seem to be trying too hard, from where I stand, at any rate.

  4. It is hard to put into words how shocked I am that it took BP so long to make any substantial profess in stopping the leak. It makes you question what kind of people they have running the company. What I find hard to believe is that a multinational cooperation like BP, with over a 100 years experience in the business, couldn’t do more. The only good thing from this whole experience is that it shows we give companies like them too much credit. This whole situation is really sad. So many people have lost their livelihood because of this.

  7. Dear Mr. “N*****”,

Assuming that is your name rather than a nom-de-plume of questionable taste, I would suggest you address your objections – such as they are – to the appropriate post, which I’m assuming is “The Great Depression, American Style”.

I assume that is what has provoked your ire.
I normally don’t allows obscenities but on the assumption that this is the maximum of your expressive capacity, I’ve made an exception in your no doubt fascinating case.

Based on your rather colorful self description, i would advise seeing a doctor asap.
